Christopher Hansen, OD
Optometrist
Dr. Chris Hansen graduated from Athens High School in Athens, West Virginia in 1988. He performed undergraduate studies in the Honors Program at West Virginia University. He continued his professional training at the Indiana University School of Optometry, completing the doctoral program with honors. Dr. Hansen then served as an optometrist in the United States Air Force for four years, earning the Air Force Commendation Medal before leaving the service to return home to the Appalachians.
Dr. Hansen founded Appalachian Eye Care in 2001 and New River Eye Care in 2004. He is certified in Primary Care Optometry and in the treatment and Management of Ocular Disease by the National Board of Examiners in Optometry. He is also an active member of the West Virginia Association of Optometric Physicians and the American Optometric Association.
Dr. Hansen is a die-hard Mountaineer and a Hoosier, but he married a Hokie. He plays several stringed instruments and is still trying to find one he is good at! Dr. Hansen is blessed to play music on occasion in church with his mother and children. In addition to music, he enjoys training and participating in triathlons – swimming, biking and running — and completed a 140.6 mile Ironman in 2015.
Bradley M. Lane, OD, MBA, MEd
Optometrist
Dr. Brad Lane is a Wyoming County native, growing up in Mullens, West Virginia, and is a proud son of a West Virginia coal miner. He earned his undergraduate degrees in psychology, sociology, and pre-professional biology from the Honor’s Program at Concord University in Athens, West Virginia. He graduated from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry with a Doctorate of Optometry in 2007 and joined Dr. Hansen as a practice owner of Appalachian Eye Care and New River Eye Care. In 2016, he completed work earning an MBA and in 2020, he earned a Masters of Education in Instructional Design.
Dr. Lane is a staunch advocate for his profession and serves on many boards that seek to advance Optometry, eye health, and patient care. He is a frequent contributor to AOA Focus magazine and the past Co-Chair of the American Optometric Association’s Education Committee. He has also served on the AOA Federal Legislative and Health Promotion Committees. He is a past president of the West Virginia Association of Optometric Physicians and currently serves as a Secretary to the Southern Education Congress of Optometry (SECO) based in Atlanta and a board member of the Optometry Care Foundation. Dr. Lane is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Optometry and was honored as the West Virginia Young Optometric Physician of the Year in 2013 and as the Optometric Physician of the Year in 2017.
Dr. Lane is also committed to his community and is the Vice Chairman of the Concord University Board of Governors, a founding member of Concord University’s White Coat Society and has created and funded three scholarships. In 2013, he was honored as the Concord University Young Alumnus of the Year and as the Concord University Philanthropist of the Year in 2021. He also serves on the board of Riding for a Cure Foundation, a local charity that raises money to transport women battling breast cancer.
He enjoys traveling, sports, golf, country music, and all things Philadelphia! Fly! Eagles! Fly!
Mckenzie VanDyke Bright, O.D.
Optometrist
Dr. McKenzie Bright grew up in Grundy, Virginia and graduated from Grundy High School. She earned a bachelors degree in Biology from University of Virginia’s College at Wise in Wise, VA in 2016. She graduated from the Kentucky College of Optometry with honors in 2020.
Dr. McKenzie fell in love with West Virginia during her clinical rotations and wanted to provide quality health care to residents in the area. Her hobbies are traveling, reading, binge watching TV shows, and playing with her dog, Bella Mae. Dr. McKenzie and her husband Joe welcomed their first child, Wren, in April 2024.
Dr. McKenzie is an active member of the American Optometric Association and student liaison for the West Virginia Association of Optometric Physicians. She was honored as the West Virginia Young Optometrist of the Year in 2023.
Josiah Bolyard, OD
Optometrist
Dr. Josiah Bolyard is a native of Green Bank, WV. While he was raised in Pocahontas County, Dr. Josiah attended high school in Colorado, graduating as valedictorian of his high school class. After high school, he attended Western Nebraska Community College and received an Associate of Science degree. During his time at WNCC, he played on the men’s soccer team.
In 2018, he finished his undergraduate studies at Mount Vernon Nazarene University, obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree with honors. He graduated from the Kentucky College of Optometry (KYCO) with honors in 2022. As a graduating student from KYCO, he received the “VSP Global Private Practice Award”, based on academic achievement, clinical and patient care, and leadership qualities with a special focus on private practice. Dr. Josiah has been an advocate for paraoptometric advancement and education; he has lectured to paraoptometrics on the state and national level.
Dr. Josiah is excited for the opportunity to practice in his native West Virginia. He is married to his wife, Jayna. The couple has a young daughter, Joan. He enjoys spending his free time fishing, golfing, and reading.
Blake Hopkins, OD
Optometrist
Dr. Blake Hopkins grew up in Athens, WV and graduated from PikeView High School in Mercer County. He attended Concord University in Athens, WV where he competed as captain of the varsity esports team. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in 2021, graduating with honors. He then completed his Doctor of Optometry training at the Indiana University School of Optometry.
Dr. Hopkins and his wife, Hannah, were excited to return home and join the Appalachian Eye Care family where he was a lifelong patient and previous technician. He is thrilled to be working at a practice that places the same value on patient care and hospitality that he does. He is an active member of the West Virginia Association of Optometric Physicians and the American Optometric Association. He is also certified by the National Board of Examiners in Optometry in Primary Care Optometry, treatment and management of Ocular Disease, and minor surgical procedures and injections.
Dr. Hopkins loves watching and playing sports like pickleball and disc golf. He is a big music fan, including playing guitar and piano. He is glad to live in an area where you can always find home-cooked food, the tea is always sweet, and friends and strangers are treated alike.
